Description

This savory cabbage beef bake transforms budget-friendly ingredients into a delicious, hearty meal for the whole family—ready in just over an hour with incredible flavor and nutrition.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 pounds ground beef (80/20)
  • 1 large yellow onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 large head savoy cabbage
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon caraway seeds (optional)
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes, drained
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1.5 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Prep savoy cabbage: core, separate, and rinse leaves.
  2. Blanch cabbage leaves for 2–3 minutes, then transfer to ice bath. Pat dry.
  3. Sauté onion in olive oil for 4–5 minutes, add garlic, then ground beef. Cook until browned, season with salt, pepper, paprika.
  4. Add tomato paste, cook 1 minute. Stir in tomatoes, broth, Worcestershire, and thyme. Simmer 5–7 minutes.
  5. Layer half the cabbage in dish. Spread beef mixture evenly, top with remaining cabbage.
  6. Combine cheese, breadcrumbs, and parsley. Sprinkle over top.
  7. Cover with foil and bake 35 minutes. Uncover and bake 15–20 minutes until golden and bubbling.
  8. Let rest 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

Savoy cabbage offers tenderness and sweetness that elevate this dish. Use green cabbage if needed, but blanch longer. Easily adapted for keto or plant-based diets.
