- 2-inch piece of fresh ginger root, thinly sliced (or 1 tbsp ground ginger)
- 1 medium organic lemon, freshly juiced (or 2 tbsp bottled lemon juice)
- 1–2 tablespoons raw, unfiltered honey (or maple syrup for vegan option)
- 4 cups filtered water
- Optional: cinnamon stick, 1-2 cardamom pods, pinch of cayenne pepper
- Optional garnish: fresh mint leaves or lemon slice
Instructions
- Wash and thinly slice ginger, leaving the skin on for more benefits.
- Bring 4 cups of filtered water to a boil in a medium saucepan.
- Add sliced ginger and optional spices, reduce heat, and simmer 10-15 minutes covered.
- Remove from heat, add a pinch of black pepper, and steep covered for 5 minutes.
- Strain into a mug or pitcher and stir in fresh lemon juice at about 160°F.
- Let cool to 140°F, add honey, stir well, and serve warm or over ice.
Notes
For optimal results, drink this tea on an empty stomach 20 minutes before breakfast. Avoid adding honey while tea is boiling hot to preserve its nutrients. Store leftovers refrigerated and reheat gently without boiling.
